Jalopnik will eventually need to follow you. I think I got out of the grey a few days ago on a comment saying that car enthusiasts are a bitchy, miserly bunch. Note that I’ve been on Jalopnik for years (although I recently stopped using another account since it was tied to my Twitter, and I can’t login via Twitter on work computers, so now it’s tied to my Google account) and during that time I’ve been in and out of the grey a few times.
FP has become... not as good. You should eventually get a follow if you post comments here and there, but given the state of the FP, sometimes you wind up seeing comments from people who have no business being out of the grey, let alone owning a computer and communicating with other humans at all.

Anyone who is not pending can un-grey your comment by either star-recommending it or simply replying to it.
Alternatively, a Jalopnik writer can un-grey you by “following for Jalopnik”. Despite what it sounds like, it doesn’t mean that they start watching your every post, though. The crew at Jalopnik is better than most other Gawker Media sites for un-greying commenters. Sploid and io9 are some of the greyer areas of Kinja.
Once “followed”, only your subsequent comments will be approved; past comments remain grey.

As others have said Jalopnik has to follow you. Which has happened to me twice. After the first time Kinja wiped a lot of people off, took months to be followed again.

Rather funny because it’s bugging me that I’m still stuck in the grays so I googled “how do I get out of the grays kinja ” and, natch, your advice came up as the number one Google result. Guess I’ll keep plugging at it and thanks for the ProTip™.
Though what you didn’t say, doesn’t it take one of the editors or writers of the article to actually drag you kicking and screaming out of the grays? i.e. Patrick, Michael, Erin, Jason, Raphael, Erik, Andrew, Kristen, Alanis, David, Justin, Elizabeth or Erin? I don’t even think contributors can ungray you – Graverobber (Rob), Stef, Tom, Brad, Ken, David, Peter, or Kurt.
As in, other commenters can’t pull a person out of the grays for good (outside of the one-time starring or replying), correct? Like, I can’t just slide you a $20 and say “hey, go star my gray response to NPoCP.” Eh?
